The Basic Forms
To depict the head from any bending yous must kickoff understand its basic structure. Wait past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify can be applied to the features of the face up, but when starting the cartoon yous could expect even further. Ignore fifty-fifty the features and simplify to the virtually basic course of the head. I apply a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Head & Easily".
The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is asphereas the cranium and ablock every bit the jaw and cheek basic.
A Sphere as the Cranium
The sides of the head are flat, so we tin can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From profile, this plane volition be a perfect circle, only when drawing it from whatever other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the kickoff of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the brow line. The top and lesser of the oval help you lot find the hair line and the bottom of the nose.
A Block every bit the Jaw and Cheek Bones
Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will first at the forehead line and the back will start at the center of the oval. This is a 3-D volume with a front plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).
Constructing From Any Angle
Step 1 – Determine the bending of the ball
The angle of the head is established at the very kickoff of the drawing with the ball. All three axes must be addressed:
X Axis – The up and downward tilt is established by the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Also, on farthermost upwardly tilts and down tilts, the thirds volition be foreshortened because of perspective.
Y Axis – The direction the caput is turning (left or right) is established past the width of the oval. As the head turns towards you, you can see more of the front end of the face up and less of the side, so the oval representing the side will go narrower. Similarly, when the head turns away from y'all, more than of the side plane is revealed and the oval will announced wider.
Z Axis – The twist is established by the bending of the centre line, the bending of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.
Stride 2 – Find the thirds
After establishing the bending of the ball, divide the face into thirds. The distance between the hairline and brow-line should exist the same as the distance betwixt the brow-line and bottom of the nose. Add that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the hairline and nose-line align with the top and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped around the face. Imagine the head every bit a box. The thirds must exist wrapped around the side plane and front airplane.
Step three – Add the jaw
A common mistake at this betoken is to brand the jaw likewise long in comparison to the ball. Brand sure to mensurate your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Discover how the shape of the jaw changes from diverse angles.
Footstep four – Add together the features
ith this basic structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the correct place.Check back for more than data about specific features in a afterwards postal service.

Do inventing the head from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill an entire folio with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, you quickly realize where your weaknesses are because you can't rely on copying. You can only work with what you know.
